See polar bears in the wild — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — on a Tundra Buggy Adventure day tour! This memorable tour is designed for people who are already staying in the town of Churchill, nicknamed the Polar Bear Capital of the World due to the many bears that migrate into the area each year. On board a Tundra Buggy, a safe, specially designed wildlife-viewing vehicle, you’ll traverse the open tundra with an expert guide, searching for polar bears and other wildlife like arctic foxes. Lunch is included for this tour.

Your Tundra Buggy Adventures begins with a morning transfer to the Tundra Buggy Launch, where you will board your Tundra Buggy, a large, specially designed all-terrain vehicle that will easily transport you over the vast landscape of this part of northern Canada.

When you’re settled in the buggy, head into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area to begin your search for polar bears and other arctic wildlife. From your expert guide, learn a bit about the Churchill Wildlife Management Area’s 2.1 million acres (850,000 hectares) of subarctic land, which, in addition to being a gathering place for Manitoba’s polar bears in the summer and autumn months, is home to a variety of plant and animal life like arctic foxes, arctic hares, snowy owls and ptarmigan.

As you drive through the open tundra, listen to your guide talk about the effects of the environment — like tides and ice formation — on the lives of polar bears. Then prepare to have your breath taken away when you first spot the spectacular polar bear in its natural environment. The buggy will get you as close as possible to the bears when they are spotted, and if you’re lucky, a curious bear may even come right up to the vehicle.

Please note: Autumn is peak polar bear season, so activities at that time are more focused on viewing the awe-inspiring bears. During the summer months you may see the occasional polar bear, but your guide will bring more attention to other wildlife in the region as well.

During your tour, enjoy a picnic-style lunch, which usually includes a sandwich, soup, cookie and coffee, tea or soft drinks.

When you return to the Tundra Buggy Launch Area, you’ll be driven back to Churchill (exact location depends on the season; see below).

This tour takes in the Seagrim lake chain, a set of small pristine lakes in Nopiming park. This area of the park is known for it’s population of boreal caribou, as well as being an easy introduction to canoe camping, due to the small lakes and well established camp sites. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a short trip with easy distances. It makes for a fun and accessible first trip!

The Trip

Each day you can expect a delicious breakfast prepared by guide, followed by some time to relax and enjoy the views while drinking your morning coffee or tea. Once we pack up,  we'll get on the water and paddle for about 1.5 hours before finding a spot for a lunch break, as well as swimming if anyone wants to cool off. After lunch we will continue paddling for another 2 to 3 hours and then settle down at our spot for the evening. We will have between 0 and 3 portages per day, (carrying gear by foot between lakes). The longest is 250 metres, but most are closer to 150. At our site, your guide will teach everyone about the basics of clean and responsible camping and help with site setup along every step of the way. You can choose any number of ways to enjoy your time at the site, including swimming, hiking, picking blueberries, or just chatting around the fire. Your guide will prepare a delicious camp dinner and you can enjoy time with new or old friends, sharing stories around the campfire!
